PRP for Facet Joint Pain

Understanding the treatment question.

Facet joints connect neighboring vertebrae and help guide movement in the spine. If these joints are suspected to be a source of pain, the first step is an evaluation to understand your symptoms and discuss treatment options.

What PRP involves.

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is prepared from a sample of your own blood. Processing concentrates the platelets before injection into a selected area. The evidence for PRP varies by condition, and results are not guaranteed.

Whether PRP is appropriate for facet joint pain requires an individual discussion. Ask what evidence supports the proposed use, which alternatives are available, and what the treatment will cost.

Questions for your evaluation.

  • What suggests that the facet joint is the source of my pain?
  • What are the likely benefits, limitations and risks?
  • Are other treatments more appropriate?
  • How will we assess the response and decide on follow-up?
