What You Need to Know Before Your Procedure
1. Do I need to fast before my procedure?
Only if sedation is planned. You must fast (no food or drink) for 6–8 hours before your procedure.
If you are not receiving sedation (local anesthesia only), you may eat a light meal 4–6 hours before and drink clear liquids up to 2 hours prior.
2. What’s the difference between local anesthesia and sedation?
- Local anesthesia numbs only the treatment area. You are fully awake and alert during the procedure.
- Sedation (given through IV) helps you relax, feel sleepy, and have little to no memory of the procedure. Sedation always requires fasting and a driver.
3. Can I drive myself home?
- No — if you receive sedation, a responsible adult must drive you home and stay with you for the day.
- If you are not sedated, you may drive yourself unless told otherwise.
4. Which medications should I stop before my procedure?
- NSAIDs (Advil, Aleve, ibuprofen, aspirin, naproxen): Stop 5–7 days prior unless otherwise directed.
- Blood thinners (e.g., Coumadin, Plavix, Eliquis): Only stop if approved by your prescribing doctor.
- Essential medications for heart, blood pressure, or diabetes: Continue as usual unless told otherwise.
5. What should I bring on the day of my procedure?
- A valid photo ID
- Medication list
- CPAP machine, if you use one
- Comfortable clothing
- A driver, if you’re receiving sedation
6. Can I take my usual medications on the day of the procedure?
Yes, take your regular medications (especially for blood pressure, heart, and diabetes) with a small sip of water — unless told otherwise by your doctor.
7. What should I expect after my procedure?
- You may experience mild soreness or numbness at the injection or incision site.
- Use ice packs for 15–20 minutes at a time to reduce discomfort.
- Avoid driving, alcohol, and strenuous activity for 24 hours if sedation was used.
- Pain relief from injections (especially with steroids) may take 3–7 days to begin.
8. When is my follow-up appointment?
Our office will contact you to schedule your 2-week follow-up. If you don’t receive a call, feel free to reach out to us.
9. What if I feel unwell after the procedure?
Call us immediately or go to the ER if you experience:
- Fever over 101°F
- Severe pain, swelling, or redness
- Signs of infection (drainage, heat, foul odor)
- Weakness, numbness, or difficulty breathing
